JESSAMAE ST. JAMES
Jazz chanteuse Jessamae St. James burst onto the Melbourne burlesque scene with her debut at the Victorian Arts Centre for JoyFM. A graduate of the music theatre program at the Victorian College of the Arts, Jessamae indulges her love for an era long gone incorporating tunes from the MGM musicals of old and forgotten jazz songs into her art.
Notable performances include The Australian Burlesque Festival (Melbourne 2010), The Sydney Tattoo and Body Art Expo (Sydney 2010), Chaz Royal’s New Years Eve Burlesque Ball (London 2010), Miss Burlesque Australia (Melbourne 2011) Candle Ends Mini Festival ( Melbourne 2011) and a sold out weekend as a headlining act for the first Lorne Performing Arts Festival (Lorne 2011).
As a solo performer Jessamae's original music has been featured alongside Australian music greats such as Deborah Conway and Claire Bowditch on the CD Naked in the Woods 2 as part of the FReeZA mentorship program released in September 2010. Her velvet vocals glide over a mixture of well-known and original jazz songs reminiscent of a melancholy jazz crooner from days long ago and what she creates is a pinch of vaudeville, a dash of old school class and a shake of something a little bit sinister.
