Stonnington Jazz: The Jelly Tub Rollers
The Jelly Tub Rollers play thigh-slappin' 1930s party jazz and blues. Featuring the flying feet and raucous rhythms of Thomas the Tap Engine, these over-dressed super-swing vaudevillians are guaranteed to get your party jumping! Combining the driving beat of drums, double bass and guitar with the tickles and moans of saxophone, trombone and vocals, the Jelly Tub Rollers bring an old-world energy to classic and original jazz tunes.
The Jelly Tub Rollers started as a busking band in early 2008, busking being an ideal forum for sharing the energy and flavor of their crowd-stopping performances. Their unique name was created when a happy listener donated some flavored jelly tubs in lieu of spare change, the name also serves as a tip of the hat to old-school jazz musicians such as Jelly Roll Morton.
To this day, the Jelly Tub Rollers retain the spontaneity of their busking roots and the joy of sharing their passion for music with a diverse audience by now performing at various venues, festivals, weddings and parties around Victoria.
Combining forces with Thomas the Tap Engine (a.k.a. Thomas Walderton) proved to be a natural symbiosis, since tap dance and swing music have always gone hand-in-hand. Continually astounding crowds and band members alike with his inventiveness, technique and infectious rhythm, Thomas is a highly regarded proponent of tap and an integral member of the Jelly Tub Rollers.
With the brainchild of the saxophonist and songwriter Darcy McNulty (Kafka, Kooii), the Jelly Tub Rollers bring together some of the best up-and-coming musicians in the Australian music scene, including Elise Winterflood (Chalga Party, Reflejos) on double bass, Dominic Hede (Kafka, Doch) on drums, Matt Witney (The Stride Auspicious, Salts) on guitar and vocals, and Bryce Gilhome (The Skylines, Chasing Gravity) on trombone.
