The Magic Hatstand & Circa Nocturna Pre-Party!
Bored of the crash bang wallop of normality? Are your nights out exciting you as much as the drone of chronic tinnitus? Time for a change from the four-to-the-floor onslaught of generic clubbing?
Well, this next Magic Hatstand is a royal variety show of Burlesque, eclectic DJ’s, fancy head dress and dwarf juggling!(subject to availability)
We can’t guarantee a rebate in all those brain cells you’ve burned listening to dance music and F1 white noise, but we can provide you with an opportunity to let your hair down and enter our circus-like oasis above the pomp and prance of Chapel St. We’re more va va voom than broom broom – so leave your UV spoiler haircut at home, don your best hat and immerse yourself in something a bit more daring than normal. If we’re too racy and leftfield for you, feel safe in the knowledge that Revolver is only a block away.
FEATURING PERFORMANCES FROM...
LOLA THE VAMP [QLD]
The darling of burlesque, Tease-o-rama headliner (USA), Penthouse Pet, Tabloid Sensation, Artist's Muse.
Lola's list of credits reads like no other. Few performers have garnered such intense media attention and breathless
Lola is honoured to be a part of a rich and elaborate history of incredible and brazen performers, and pays tribute in her shows to the
dancers who have paved her gilded way.
"Beautiful." - Nick Cave
"A highly-developed aesthetic and a sly wit. Super sexy without ever being tawrdy, Lola is in a league of her own." - The Age
BLUE VELVET [QLD]
Brisbane born Blue Velvet is a girl with many artistic talents. A graphic designer by day, Blue moonlights as a lead singer for the band Alphabeticus and one third of retro styled vocal group The Eastside Trio. In 2009 Blue discovered the risqué world of burlesque and has since spent many a night revelling in sequins and feathers. This busy girl also dabbles in pin-up modelling, enjoying any excuse to play dress ups.
WITH YOUR DJS...
Melbourne’s very own David Mancuso - a music collector to the core. He wheels his massive record collection with him wherever he goes and refuses to use anything more electronic than a pair of trusty turntables. It’s this Mormon-styled/purest DJ approach disappeared many years ago, but not to extinction. He’s a rare breed and very much endangered, so catch him before the laptop dj’s track him down and slaughter him…or convert him. Expect anything and everything from Louis Armstrong to the Roots to Marva Whitney to records jumping like electrocuted cattle.
A bastion of all things eclectic, Wijay will be dusting dust down the rarest of
rare vinyl for his special burlesque set that’s been bubbling away on the back burner for decades, waiting for this moment, conspiring against all his normal records, hoping for this break. This could be a career defining moment.
LEO FIELDGRASS aka MOYZA
From running international record labels to radio appearances to compiling podcasts to helping the aged across landfills, Moyza is busy fellow. Thankfully he’s taken some time out to entertain us with he own inimitable brand of funk. Yes, he’s the Jewish George Clinton and he’s got a pop gun the size of a marrow. It’s white chocolate city baby and the milky bars are on him!
Tyson is a highly decorated dj, figuratively speaking (although he does wear nice tweed caps), with many accolades for his work behind the wheels of steel. His diverse range of music from twisted funk to swing to disco to house has earned him such titles as ‘Best New DJ’ in the iDJ Magazine. This seasoned pro has dj’ed in many of Melbourne leading clubs and is a Magic Hatstand regular.
A genuine vinyl Dj, Hussey began Djing in Art Galleries many years ago in & around Melbourne's alleyways & has since become popular amongst local & international Artists performing & creating soundscapes at openings & exhibitions for Damien Hirst, Banksy, Ha Ha, Swoon, Blek Le Rat, Neckface, Sarah Beetson, Stormy Mills, Deb, Van Rudd, Sheppard Fairy, the list goes on & on.
It's places & spaces with Hussey, his opinion of what makes a great party doesn't mean that everyone needs to be dancing but so long as everyone is having a good time. His take on Djing is quite clear "Mixing is not important, track selection, programing & playing a record with passion is the key". Rarely do you see him performing in a club but always find him searching for an unusual & interesting space to have a party gathering more often than not without a permit.
Fresh off a 7 week epic party journey around the country accompanying his once idols & now good friends DJ Harvey & Dj Garth, Hussey will be in inspired form & armed with a nice mix of tunes.
He’s one of Melbourne’s hidden treasures, just like those infamous laneway bars, which incidentally he often hides in, spinning long hypnotic sets whilst sipping strange juice. He’s been involved with music since he was a fetus, in bands and later as a dj and booking agent. With a music style that is very eclectic he tries to tell a story when he’s playing by joining varying styles that have a common theme, though it may not seem very obvious, be it melancholic, moody, funked up, deep or sparse.
