Anthony DeMasi - An Awful Lot of Vaudeville

Wednesday 10th August, 2011

Red Bennies is bedazzled by Brian the Bunny and the mastermind Anthony DeMasi.

What are the names of your bunnies?

Brian is the white bunny. He has been working with me for 6.5 years and is a very cool rabbit.

The newby is Sebastian, the black and white bunny. He has only being performing for 6.5 months, as opposed to Brian’s 6.5 years. Brian is teaching him lots. He’s a bunny in training, a work experience bunny.

I believe that one day he will be ready to be shot out of a cannon!!

When did you start doing magic?

I started doing magic when I was 18. I always had an interest in the performing arts from a very young age. When I was 7 I did a lot of circus performing, such as juggling, unicycle and balancing acts. I guess that’s what started the magic.

How do you train to be a Magician?

To be a good magician it takes many years of studying the basic principles of magic. After this it takes quite a long time to create and develop the image and persona of the magician.

I learnt my magic mainly from travelling all around the world. It’s quite surprising how many amazing, inspiring people you can bump into and learn from on your travels.

Who is your favorite Magician and why?

Penn & Teller from Las Vegas. Even though they are not very well known to the greater public, they know exactly how to add comedy, mystery and suspense to their act. They take the audience on a journey and really play on the human sense of curiosity. This is something I admire and that is really how I like to view my Magic.

What is your favorite magic trick?

I love the animals! The Dove Painting trick is definitely my favorite. Simply put it is a painting of a dove, which comes to life and flies out of the canvas…

What was your favorite thing about performing at Red Bennies on Friday night?

I really loved the fact that the audience is so close to the action. As an entertainer you really get to see and experience the audience having a good time right in front of you. They give you so much more energy as a performer and it really feels like they are giving something back to you. I loved watching the audience and the vibe and ambience of the entire Red Bennies venue was amazing!

What other Vaudeville performer did you really enjoy last Friday night at Red Bennies?

I really liked watching Justin Sane. I loved his Vaudevillian style of comedy and magic.

What can the audience expect for your next act this coming Friday night?

There will be a couple of new surprises for those that are coming back to see the show. That is all I can reveal…

What Vaudevillian Side-Show Freak would you be?

I would be the Tattoo Man, with lots of muscles. Which of course I am hiding underneath my suit…

Are you going to tell us where the doves went?

The birds disappear into thin air…

Any final comments Anthony?

Well… Just wanted to let you know that Brian actually only works for me part-time. He also works at the Greyhound Tracks every Friday night (And always wins!!).

He has taken the month off though to perform at An Awful Lot of Vaudeville just for Red Bennies.

Catch up with Brian, Sebastien and Anthony this Friday night for An Awful Lot of Vaudeville at Red Bennies.
